Located on the South Bank of the River Clyde close to the Pacific Quay, Mecanoo proposed a new headquarters for BBC Scotland. The commission was to design a building that could function as a first step in the creation and development of a densely populated, energetic media city. Mecanoo designed an original, imaginative building that encapsulated the concept of the work place of the future.
The new spaces would encourage a collective office ethic, enabling an effective knowledge exchange between employees from different departments.
The spine of the building was to be a three story high internal street that spanned from the main entrance at the western façade to the eastern glass wall at the riverside, connecting all the major functions of the building.
The design was an example of future proof urban architecture. On the rooftop a large pavilion would serve as a restaurant and viewing gallery where visitors and workers could enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the river and city.
On the same level two large conference rooms with sliding and folding partitions would be located, transformable from small intimate spaces into large panoramic environments within seconds.
The building was designed to be made accessible for visitors without affecting the privacy and safety of the employees. The eastern facade of the building would look over the public square and promenade that passes along the River Clyde. The inclusive, visible building would catalyse the growth and development of the area at large.
