2014 has been a year not to forget for Mecanoo. As we head into the Christmas holidays we can’t help but look back at some of the defining moments.
In February, Francine Houben was honoured by the Architects’ Journal as the Woman Architect of the Year. In the same month, a team comprising of Mecanoo and Martinez + Johnson (US) is chosen to restore and renovate the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in Washington D.C.
The Library of Birmingham won 5 RIBA awards in April and went onto be one of the six finalists for the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize. It was also voted as the UK’s favourite new building by readers of the BBC website, as well as by readers of the Architects’ Journal (taking over 40% of the vote). In May, Mecanoo was appointed to design the new Engineering Campus for the University of Manchester, bringing together four world renowned faculties back into the heart of the campus.
In the Netherlands, closer to home, the Rabobank Westelijke Mijnstreek Advice Centre opened its doors in June, followed by the Noorderpoort College in Stadskanaal in November.
Our immersive new website made its debut in September, and just in time for October when Mecanoo was awarded first prize in the design contest for the new European Investment Bank (EIB) building in Luxembourg. October was certainly a month to remember, as we also saw the opening of the exhibition ‘A People’s Palace’ at the prestigious Aedes Architecture Forum in Berlin. This exhibition will start travelling the world in the forthcoming year.
We don’t yet know what will happen in 2015 but it promises to be another exciting year for Mecanoo!
Merry Christmas & happy new year!
