Housing: a global perspective – Dick van Gameren lecture at WAF
08.11.2016 - Events
Dick van Gameren, Professor of Dwelling at Delft University of Technology and partner at Mecanoo architecten, will give a lecture on housing at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Berlin on Wednesday 16 November 2016.
The main theme for this year’s edition of WAF is ‘Housing for Everyone’. The theme is prompted by a variety of influences, not least the situation of displaced communities (war refugees, natural and man-made disasters); the growing understanding of how demographics and global urbanization are forcing change; and the imperatives to create shelter at one end of the spectrum, and sufficiency for occupation and investment at the other.
Dick’s lecture will present a global perspective on housing. According to the World Urbanization Prospects published by the United Nations (UN) in 2014, in the next three decades the global urban population will increase by 2,5 billion. So, where will all these people live? What sort of housing and cities will they occupy? What will be the role of architects and urban planners in the creation of new and/or intensified environments?
World Architecture Festival 2016 will take place on the 16 - 18 November in Berlin, Germany. Other speakers of the seminar programme include Ben van Berkel (UNStudio), Matthias Sauerbruch (Sauerbruch Hutton), Coren Sharples (SHoP Architects) and Patrik Schumacher ) Zaha Hadid Architects).
