The HUBB furniture series, which was created by Mecanoo and Gispen, has won a Red Dot Award. This prestigious design prize is awarded annually to innovative products that excel in terms of quality. A jury comprising of 38 international experts has awarded HUBB the Red Dot Award Product Design 2017 because of its clever modular design, sustainable materials and many possible applications.
Professor Dr Peter Zec, founder and CEO of the Red Dot Award: “The Red Dot winners have pursued the right design strategy in realising that good design and economic success go hand in hand. Being selected by this critical Red Dot jury reinforces the fact that these designs are of outstanding quality.”
HUBB is an innovative, modular concept which consists of a series of elements with a seemingly straightforward basic shape, which can be linked to form endless combinations. This allows you to create a custom-made learning- or working environment that facilitates various activities.
Paul Ketelaars, partner at Mecanoo architects: “HUBB is the result of a study into the learning environment of the future; an inspiring place where various activities take place simultaneously. Zones for meeting one another, working together or focused studying all seamlessly merge into each other. HUBB lies at the core of such a learning environment. We are very proud of the fact that our vision of the learning environment has been rewarded with this important prize.”
HUBB is unique in both form and its materials and is produced according to the principles of the Circular Economy. HUBB allows for easy and durable reuse should requirements change.
Maurits van Berckel, Commercial Director Gispen: “I am utterly delighted that we have created an award-winning product that is the perfect combination of functionality, sustainability and beautiful design. HUBB is manufactured from honest materials: wood from European reforestation forests, recyclable PET-material, steel and screw- and snap connections instead of glue. The extendable top is equipped with power outlets and light sensors which are easy to keep up to date. HUBB is the unique result of a close partnership at the interface of product design and architecture.”
HUBB was designed for education, but is also perfectly suited for offices, cultural institutes or health care environments. The Red Dot Awards ceremony will take place in Essen on 3 July 2017. The Red Dot Design Year Book, which includes all the prize winners of 2017/2018, will also be published on July 3. In addition, the products will be showcased in the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen.
