On Monday, the first foundation stone of the new velodrome was laid. It will be accompanied by a swimming pool and several sports fields. The construction period is estimated to be four to five years.
Situated in the rolling countryside of Luxembourg on the edge of Mondorf-les-Bains, the new Velodrome and Sports Complex, designed by Mecanoo and Metaform, is set to strengthen the community's reputation, known for its thermal baths, as a recreational destination. The facilities combine the new national velodrome with an aquatic center and multisport hall, creating a sports destination capable of hosting national and international cycling events. Simultaneously, it serves as a sporting hub for the community and a potential future international school, which is proposed to be located adjacent to the site.
The pools and sports hall are integrated into the topography and covered by sloping green roofs, blending the building into the landscape. This design highlights the velodrome as a recognizable landmark in the landscape, visible from the neighboring highway. The manipulation of topography and landscape rationalizes the complex program in a clever and economical way.
"It is essential, particularly for young people, to have the opportunity to train in safe conditions. This is the only way our country can build on past cycling successes. To further advance sports internationally, more financial support from the state will be necessary in the future," explained Sports Minister Georges Engel (LSAP).
