Francine Houben distinguished with The Order of the Netherlands Lion

King Willem-Alexander has appointed Francine Houben as Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion. The founder and creative director of Mecanoo received the Royal decoration on Friday, February 9, during a surprise event in the presence of Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb of Rotterdam.

Houben (1955) received the decoration for her significant and innovative contribution to architecture in the Netherlands and abroad. With her vision, unique talent and entrepreneurship, she has put Dutch architecture on the map worldwide. There is therefore great national and international appreciation for Houben's efforts. She is known as a visionary, inspirer and motivator.

Francine Houben started her company Mecanoo Architecten in 1984. From the very first projects, her focus on urban renewal and improving the quality of housing was evident. In her design, she places the user at the centre and reflects the local context and culture. Houben does this very successfully; under her leadership, Mecanoo Architecten has grown into an innovative and leading architectural firm working on iconic projects worldwide.

Her iconic buildings include the Library Delft University of Technology, the Montevideo residential tower in Rotterdam and the National Center for the Arts in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Additionally, Houben worked on the circular renovation of the De Nederlandsche Bank in Amsterdam. Since 2015, Houben has been working on the renovation of the New York Public Library's famed Stephen A. Schwarzman Building and the design of the new Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library.

Houben enjoys sharing her knowledge and experience with interested individuals and colleagues. She writes (inter)national publications and columns, organizes exhibitions and gives lectures. She also guides architecture students and young talents in her company. In 2000 she became the first female professor of Architecture at TU Delft and in 2004 the first woman to deliver a Dies Natalis lecture at the TU Delft. Houben has also taught at Harvard and Yale, among others.

In addition to her professional career, Houben is also active as a volunteer board member. She was a member of the Supervisory Board of the International Film Festival Rotterdam and the Kröller Müller Museum. She was also the director and curator of the first International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam. During that period she initiated exhibitions, conferences and lectures. Houben is currently a member of the Dutch Academy of Arts, a member of the Supervisory Board of the Scapino Ballet and founder of the Manifesto Group Rotterdam South.

The Order of the Netherlands Lion was established in 1815. The decoration contains the Latin words 'Virtus Nobilitat' (virtue nobility). Persons with exceptional services to society are eligible for appointment to the Order of the Netherlands Lion.

Koning Willem-Alexander heeft architect Francine Houben benoemd tot Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw. Deze Koninklijke onderscheiding werd 9 februari 2024 uitgereikt door burgemeester Ahmed Aboutaleb in de bibliotheek van Rotterdam. De bijeenkomst met 125 gasten was een complete verrassing voor haar.

Houben (1955) ontving de onderscheiding voor haar belangrijke en vernieuwende bijdrage aan de architectuur in Nederland en daarbuiten. Met haar visie, unieke talent en ondernemerschap heeft zij de Nederlandse architectuur mede wereldwijd op de kaart gezet. Er is dan ook grote nationale en internationale waardering voor Houbens inspanningen. Ze staat bekend als visionair, inspirator en motivator. In haar dankwoord benoemde Houben het als haar grootste wens om een prachtig gerenoveerd museumgebouw voor Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam te realiseren.

Voor een benoeming in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw komen personen in aanmerking met exceptionele verdiensten voor de samenleving. Aboutaleb roemde haar plan “Een Nieuw Perspectief voor Rotterdam Zuid” die Houben op eigen initiatief startte.

Francine Houben richtte in 1984 Mecanoo Architecten op samen met jaargenoten van de TU Delft. Bij de eerste projecten was de focus op kwaliteitsverbetering van de stadsvernieuwing. Daarna breide het oeuvre zich enorm uit. In haar ontwerpen plaatst zij de gebruiker centraal en weerspiegelt zij de lokale context en cultuur. Dat doet Houben zeer succesvol; onder haar leiding is Mecanoo Architecten uitgegroeid tot een innovatief en toonaangevend architectenbureau dat wereldwijd beeldbepalende projecten realiseert.

Iconische gebouwen van haar hand zijn onder andere de Bibliotheek van de Technische Universiteit Delft, woontoren Montevideo in Rotterdam, de Library of Birmingham en het National Center for the Arts in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Evenals de beroemde New York Public Library en Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library, beide aan Fifth Avenue. Daarnaast werkt Houben aan de circulaire transformatie  van De Nederlandsche Bank in Amsterdam.

Houben deelt haar kennis en ervaring graag met vakgenoten en het grote publiek. Zij geeft vele lezingen en interviews, schrijft (inter)nationale publicaties en columns en organiseert tentoonstellingen. In 2000 werd zij de eerste vrouwelijke professor architectuur aan de TU Delft en ze was in 2004 de eerste vrouwelijke professor die de Dies Natalis rede van de TU Delft uitsprak. Houben was visiting professor aan de universiteiten van Harvard en Yale in de USA. Houben was directeur en curator van de eerste Internationale Architectuur Biënnale Rotterdam met als thema ‘Mobility a room with a view’.

Naast haar professionele loopbaan is Houben ook maatschappelijk actief. Ze was lid van de Raad van Toezicht van het International Film Festival Rotterdam, het Kröller Müller Museum en bestuurslid van de Carnegie Foundation. Momenteel is Houben lid van de Akademie van Kunsten van Berlijn en Amsterdam, de Raad van Toezicht van het Scapino Ballet en oprichter van de Manifestgroep Rotterdam Zuid. In het Brabantse Herpt heeft Houben belangeloos een prachtig cultureel centrum, De Nieuwe Schuur, gerealiseerd.
