Saadiyat Cultural District is a global platform, emanating from a rich cultural heritage, celebrating traditions, and advancing equitable culture. It is an embodiment of empowerment, showcasing museums, collections, and narratives that celebrate the region’s heritage while promoting a diverse global cultural landscape.
Once completed, the diversity of Saadiyat Cultural District’s institutions will make the district one of the most unique cultural platforms, including Mecanoo's Natural History Museum. Visitors will travel on a 13.8-billion-year journey through time and space, which will include a thought-provoking perspective into a sustainable future for planet Earth.
Currently under construction, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi will feature some of the rarest wonders of natural history ever found. Covering an area of more than 35,000 sqm, Mecanoo designed the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi to resonate with natural rock formations, reflecting the museum’s goal of improving understanding of and engagement with the natural world. Every element of the design uses geometry as an overriding theme, with pentagonal shapes resembling cellular structures. Also playing an important role in the design are water and vegetation, potent symbols of life in the desert.
Nuno Fontarra, Architect/Partner at Mecanoo: "We are excited to see the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi come to life, designed to harmonize with its environment, using geometry and natural elements to engage visitors with the story of our planet, fostering a deeper connection with the natural world."
