Four Decades of Celebration: Mecanoo’s Legacy of Creativity and Innovation

This past week, we celebrated a significant milestone—40 years of Mecanoo. To mark the occasion, we opened the doors of our beautiful headquarters at Oude Delft 203. It was a truly special moment as we welcomed clients, consultants, and longtime collaborators into our space.

Our headquarters, rich in history dating back to the 16th century, provided the perfect backdrop. Originally a patrician home and later a hospital, this building has evolved into a place where architecture, interiors, restoration, landscape, and urban planning come together. Visitors explored our office spaces—from the long marble corridor to the intricate stuccoed ceilings—while walking through rooms that showcased projects reflecting our four decades of work.

The celebration extended into the garden, where speeches were given by Dick van Gameren, Partner/Design and Research Director, and Founding Partner/Creative Director Francine Houben. Francine reflected on the firm’s journey from humble beginnings in the early 80s to becoming a globally recognised architectural firm. The moment honoured the partnerships and creative contributions that have shaped Mecanoo's oeuvre.

Francine Houben was presented with the Medal of Honour of the City of Delft by Mayor Marja van Bijsterveldt. This accolade was given in recognition of Mecanoo’s 40 years of remarkable contributions and its impact on Delft’s entrepreneurial spirit, which extends well beyond national borders.

Key projects celebrated include the iconic Library at Delft University of Technology, the innovative Mekelpark at TU Delft, and the striking Delft Railway Station and City Hall. These projects showcase Mecanoo’s commitment to transforming and enhancing Delft’s urban landscape.

On Saturday, we reunited with current and former colleagues, family, and friends in a more casual setting. The relaxed atmosphere strengthened the collaborative spirit that has been at the heart of Mecanoo’s success over the years.

It was a wonderful way to mark four decades of creativity, collaboration, and growth. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey with us!
