Mecanoo has been selected to lead the design of "Uniek," an ambitious project to renovate Utrecht University’s landmarked Van Unnik building. The transformation aims to revitalise the tallest building on the university’s campus, converting it into a modern, sustainable hub for learning, activity-based work, research, and social interaction.
As part of Utrecht University’s commitment to sustainability, the renovation will focus on achieving energy neutrality and incorporating circular building techniques. Mecanoo will lead the design strategy, ensuring that the building embodies the latest in sustainable architecture while preserving its historical and cultural significance.
The revitalised Van Unnik building will feature new educational spaces, social hubs, study areas, a multifunctional pavilion, the revitalisation of the basketbar monument, and catering facilities, fostering collaboration and interaction among students, faculty, and visitors. The design will integrate green spaces within and around the building, enhancing the experience of campus life.
Known for its innovative, human-centred approach to architecture, Mecanoo will bring its experience in designing future-proof, context-sensitive projects to Utrecht University’s landmark.
Mecanoo’s design will not only breathe new life into the Van Unnik building but also set a benchmark for sustainable redevelopment across the region. The project represents a collaborative effort between architects, university stakeholders, and the local community, ensuring that the building serves as a vibrant, adaptable, and environmentally responsible centrepiece for decades to come.
