Project description

Baku’s new convention centre is conceived to complement the Heydar Aliyev Center in many ways, acting as the ‘dancing partner’ alongside the existing cultural centre. At the urban level, the new convention centre perfectly fulfils its complementary role. Its open structure allows for unobstructed views onto the Heydar Aliyev Center, while at the same time it defines a public space that connects both buildings, allowing them to work as one.

This public space will become ‘the convention square’ - partially sheltered by the large roof of the convention centre and scattered with a variety of landscape elements, like fountains, seating areas and garden beds.

The roof design of the convention centre roof does not compete with the iconic silhouette of the Heydar Aliyev Center. Its clear shape, raised at the corner opposite of the cultural centre gives the convention centre its own character, offering a perfect balance to Baku’s skyline.

At the heart of the convention centre is the 3,800-person plenary hall. With its vast range of possible layouts, it can easily be turned into a suitable space for every kind of happening, from science conventions, business events, and concerts to team meetings, cocktail parties, gala dinners and end-of-year celebrations.
