Bloomberg is a global financial services company with its own television and radio channels. Located in the centre of Amsterdam, Bloomberg's Dutch office exemplifies the organisation's commitment to their clients and to their European news service. Mecanoo was selected to transform Bloomberg’s existing two-level office into a more cohesive, spatially and functionally optimised work environment. Transparency, visual coherence and views towards the city were central in the interior design.
Prior to the design, Mecanoo undertook workplace analyses and created a responsive design scheme to improve efficiency. Located on Levels 6 and 7, the office was previously divided into an upper level with the main entrance and general work desks, and a lower level with the auditorium, training room, kitchen and private meeting rooms. Mecanoo reconfigured the office layout, reversing the floorplan to place the entrance with the other common amenities on the lower floor.
A large void with an open staircase was introduced to connect the two levels. The training room on the lower floor is multifunctional with workplaces along the perimeter and a flexible auditorium at the centre. The kitchen is located next to the training room. This new configuration allows for the distribution of workstations across both floors, resulting in more interpersonal contact and a lively ambiance throughout the entire office.
Mecanoo introduced a neutral colour palette and natural materials throughout, using oak in all common areas for a warm visual character. On both levels, a continuous oak furniture element wraps the entire space, creating flexible workspaces along the building’s facade and maximising views of the Amsterdam cityscape. Artist Hesje Andersson was responsible for the graphic design and artworks, which are inspired by Amsterdam’s rich history.
