Project description

Located in Amsterdam on the west shore of the Nieuwe Meer lake, the marina complex includes the transformation of the existing 'Brunswick' building and the boat servicing workshop. The project retains the main steel supporting structure, offers a new construction for the company residence, retail, catering building and addresses the layout of the marina and surrounding grounds.

The building ensemble is composed of four different volumes, together forming one cohesive identity. All volumes are oriented towards the lake and marina, as well as the Ringvaart canal on the other side of the Oude Haagseweg. The various buildings of the ensemble have simple, uniform, recognisable shapes. The silhouette of the complex showcases a rich variety of building volumes due to the application of different building heights, which vary from five to ten meters.

A coherent appearance is created for the entire complex of buildings through the use of unambiguous architectural elements and materials. These are applied in different ways and adapted to building-specific preconditions. At the same time, differentiation in between the buildings is introduced through various accents and articulations, creating a rich appearance.

In addition to the limited application of various architectural elements, the palette of materials and colours for all building volumes is also modest. Wood, metal and glass contribute to the unambiguous character of the ensemble. By combining these in different ways, variation is created and the buildings also acquire their own identity. Metal and wood are both materials that are rooted within the setting of the marina and thus contribute to integrate the buildings into the surroundings.
