Lelystad is set to experience significant expansion in the decades ahead. Not only by realising more homes for its increasing population but also in the sense of discovering its nature. Lelystad is located alongside the Markermeer, yet it appears to completely ignore the lake’s presence.
This urban masterplan aims to establish a connection between the city and the lake and the Nieuw Land National Park, to benefit from its unique location. The most effective approach is to physically extend the city beyond the dike and into the water. Lelystad as the 'capital of new nature' can therefore take on more form and meaning. The Waterfront Masterplan shall offer an attractive place to live and stay for Lelystad and its new residents.
The Waterfront consists of three consecutive zones with distinct characters that are closely interconnected. The first zone is the future Meerdijkhaven neighbourhood (Meerdijk harbour) with four different residential areas. The second zone consists of Bataviahaven (Batavia harbour) and the existing residential area Saerdam.
The third zone, Bataviakwartier, is designed for recreational, adventurous, and cultural pursuits. The three different zones are connected by cycling paths and a walking boulevard where, at certain nodes, cultural and social programmes invite people to meet and recreate. The other connecting element is the shoreline providing room for recreational and sporting activities.
