Every year, approximately 2.5 million passengers choose to spend their time on the train. Transdev approached Mecanoo to collaborate on the Valleilijn tender, aiming to create an innovative and future-proof design. The task at hand involved a comprehensive interior overhaul of five FTD Protos trains, accompanied by a smaller project focusing on two Stadler Flirt trainsets.
The overarching objective was to fashion a new train interior that would immerse passengers in the heart of the design. Mecanoo aimed to streamline wayfinding, provide versatile options to accommodate varying travel durations and passenger requirements, maximize capacity during peak hours, offer adaptable seating arrangements, and ensure top-notch comfort and adaptability during non-peak hours.
The result of this collaboration is a train interior that boasts a rejuvenated appearance, radiating hospitality and warmth. It offers passengers an enriched user experience through a refined layout. The train, as a result, transforms into a public space where passengers are drawn to spend their time.
This project exemplifies how Mecanoo can combine design innovation and passenger-centric thinking to transform the travel experience. The refreshed train interior not only enhances functionality but also provides an inviting and comfortable environment for travellers. It becomes more than a mode of transportation; it becomes a welcoming space where passengers can truly make the journey their own.
