Project description

The Tussen de Lanen residential area is located near the centre of Doorwerth, a village close to Arnhem. The inspiration for the new urban plan took its cue from the site itself, filled with tall trees and two historic grave mounds. In the 1960s, apartment flats were built in strict grid patterns. The old neighbourhood landscape has now been transformed into a sloping park with 250 dwellings, meandering footpaths and playgrounds dotted throughout.

The fourteen housing blocks adapt harmoniously to the landscape, winding their way through a swathe of fifty year old trees. Residents park their cars under the housing blocks creating a car free neighbourhood where children can play safely. The finishes of the dwellings have been carefully selected: red masonry with wooden facade panels provide a warm atmosphere.

In contrast, the white stucco gives the ends of the building blocks striking, fresh accents. Facade repetition has been prevented by staggering windows of different sizes along the facade, mimicking the buildings naturalistic surroundings.

Given the sloping landscape the terraces of the dwellings float on different levels above the park. In the park children can explore and play.

On the benches placed throughout the park, parents and the elderly can enjoy nature. This encapsulates the design intent of creating a well-proportioned, safe, peaceful and inclusive neighbourhood.
