Project description

The housing development on Newa in Amstelveen has been designed in accordance with Amstelveen's high-rise vision as a 'city among the trees'. The complex has a 7m-13m high plinth with transparent facades, giving the building an open appearance at street level.

The plinth has a stepped construction with spacious duplex houses and an expressive tower, approximately 40m high. The height is in line with the average height of the surrounding trees (Amstelveen Height), giving the building a human dimension. The apartment complex has no rear sides, it is open and attractive on all elevations.

The facade pattern reinforces the stepped construction and versatility of the tower. Shops and communal facilities on the corners of Groenelaan enliven the street level and the adjacent public space. All apartments have an outdoor space; the houses on the higher levels also have a beautiful view over the green landscape of Amstelveen. A roof garden with paths and plants lies between the new residential building and the adjacent existing building.

The garden adds green outdoor space to the neighbourhood, including play opportunities for children. The duplex houses on the lower levels can be reached via the garden and the residents of the adjacent apartment building can also use this green outdoor space. Residents park out of sight in the parking garage under the roof garden.

The choice of materials reinforces the composition of the building. In the plinth, transparent fronts are interspersed with brick in warm tones. The tower has an expressive appearance through the facade construction of steel panels in combination with glass, making this height accent a landmark for the neighbourhood.

Due to the planting on the lower levels and the green accents in the high-rise, the new residential complex blends into the surrounding landscape. This enhances the green character of the street level and creates a beautiful green living environment for the residents.
